Organic Farming

Organic Farming – It Starts with the Soil: organic agricultural practices maintain, replenish and balance soil fertility to produce healthy and better tasting crops. Organic farmers use an array of cultural and biological practices to build soil health, manage weeds and pests, and increase biodiversity. Some examples of organic farming practices include:

  • Crop rotations to suppress disease and support beneficial insect communities
  • Cover cropping to fix nitrogen
  • TerraVesco Vermicompost and Vermi-extract to enhance soil microbiology
  • TerraVesco Vermicompost to build organic matter
  • Bio-pesticides and mechanical controls to manage pests and disease

Organic is defined and regulated by the USDA National Organic Program (NOP). To earn certification, an organic grower must maintain an Organic System Plan and be certified by an Accredited Certifying Agent that has been approved and audited by the USDA.

Organic explicitly prohibits the use of synthetic or chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, genetically-modified organisms, sewage sludge, and irradiation.

The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), reviews specific products and materials for compliance to the National Organic Program Standards. OMRI Listed®—or approved—products may be used in operations that are certified organic under the USDA NOP. TerraVesco Vermicompost is OMRI Listed® and allowed for use in organic production.
